This is Emma’s Hotel Bed & Breakfast
Some places carry their history forward and breathe new life into it. Emma’s Hotel B&B stands on a site where people sought relaxation over 100 years ago. Today, this special history blends with a new ease of travel: peaceful, modern, close to nature, and full of warmth.
Since 2019, Emma’s has been a place for anyone looking for a home away from home. Nestled between the Bernese Alps and Lake Lungern, it offers a sense of freedom and tranquility that keeps many guests coming back time and again. We are touched by how our Emma’s community continues to grow.
Our hotel gained recognition in 2020, among other things, through the TV show “SRF bi de Lüt,” which documented its development. The international Netflix series “Crash Landing on You” also put the region around Lungern and the lake on the map far beyond the country’s borders and attracted many new guests. In addition, Emma’s, with its simple self-check-in system, represents a new approach to the hospitality industry, a concept that has been highlighted by various media outlets.
Behind it all is Barbara Caluori’s team, who put their hearts into ensuring that guests from near and far feel welcome and at home from the very first moment.
A place steeped in history: The story of Emma’s
1896
Kurhaus and Parkhotel St. Josef
In addition to the fresh mountain air of Lungern, the former luxury hotel offered its guests a tennis court and a linden-lined avenue, a smoking room and a ladies’ lounge, a croquet and bowling green—and in the summer, even a spa orchestra.
1945
Recreation and Education Center of the Swiss Catholic Women Workers' Association
The Haus St. Josef Cooperative took over the hotel as a recreational and educational center, renovated it, and added a chapel as well as the Marienburg and Josefsburg wings. The center closed in 2015.
2019
Emma’s Hotel B&B
As part of the new construction project on this historic site, Emma’s Hotel B&B was built in the former “Marienburg” annex, alongside the residential buildings. Several artifacts have been preserved as reminders of the past: the old elevator, the chandelier in the entrance, several large mirrors, a massive bag scale, various accessories, tableware, and a few pieces of furniture.
The Vintage Elevator: A Piece of the Past
Our building has been telling its story since 1954. When we renovated it in 2019, we wanted to preserve part of its past and reinterpret it in a modern way. We removed the old elevator car and preserved the 70-year-old shaft as the heart of the building. By installing mezzanine floors on each level, we created five small “curiosity niches”—places that serve as reminders of what once was. And that make our guests’ stay even more enjoyable.
Boutique
In this little boutique, you’ll always find new, lovingly selected trinkets and handy everyday items. Whether you’re looking for a small token of appreciation, a little thank-you gift, something special for your home, or a present for a loved one – there’s always something perfect to discover here.
Book Corner
For anyone who loves to lose themselves in a good story: In the attic, you’ll find a colorful collection of books, magazines, and periodicals. Perfect for a relaxing evening in the garden, at one of the village restaurants, or for quiet reading in your room.
Toy Corner
For our little (and not-so-little) guests, we have a colorful selection of games and activities to keep everyone in good spirits. That way, there’s no chance of getting bored—even on rainy days. Everything is available to borrow and take back to your room. Please be sure to return items to their proper place.
Emergency Kit
For anything you might need along the way: In our emergency kit, you’ll find handy little items like a sewing kit, shoe-cleaning supplies, a first-aid kit, stationery, ironing supplies, and even a dog bed. And for a nice little gesture, there are even free postcards.
kitchenette
There is a small tea and coffee station in the old elevator on the first floor. Our guests are welcome to enjoy a cup of fine tea or an espresso at any time of day or night. A handy feature: a microwave is available for preparing light meals.
«SRF bi de Lüt – Unser Dorf» – Staffel 2020 - Swiss Tv-Show
We were also able to play a small part in the 2020 season, which consisted of five episodes and aired on SRF TV on Friday evenings in March and April. It was a thrilling experience and a lot of fun. But our village of Lungern is even more beautiful in person, and if you’d like to see it for yourself, why not book your stay today!
